Silicic acid, when hydrolyzed, forms monosilicic acid, which is absorbed by plants, increases phosphorus absorption by 40-60% by reacting with it and making it assimilable, the insoluble phosphates of aluminum, iron, magnesium, and calcium precipitate and release the orthophosphate ion, which is absorbed by plants. Silicon is a very effective preventative against diseases, fungi, and insects by increasing the mechanical resistance of the epidermal cell wall. Silicon is absorbed by the plant through the xylem. When water is consumed by the plant, the silicon is immobilized in crystals, forming a barrier.

It increases resistance to adverse conditions, such as excessive cold or heat, dryness, salinity, and mineral toxicity. This results in improved growth and increased pollen fertility. Silicon acts as a barrier in areas where the plant is infected by fungi; it accumulates, preventing their entry. Silicon must be present in the root cell walls to act immediately. It acts as a preventative against parasitic and pathogen attacks.

It interacts strongly with calcium and magnesium, promoting their mobilization and preventing nutrient blockages. It is essential in soils with an internal pH of 6.0, and above 7.0, as it increases cation exchange, helping to regulate the substrate's pH. The soil must be moist before application for best results. Interestingly, we observed that trichomes are composed of between 13 and 60% silicon, which is the plant's main mechanical barrier to protect itself from solar radiation.

The application can be applied directly to the stem to protect against fungi, so that it produces silicon crystals, or as an irrigation to be absorbed directly by the plant. It is essential in hydroponic crops due to the number of problems that can be caused by fungi and the complete absence of silicon in this type of crop.
