The term Mycorrhiza comes from the Greek and means “root fungus.” This is a symbiosis of plants with certain fungi. Mycorrhizal fungi are essential for the survival of plants in nature. They are perfectly adapted to find water and minerals in the soil and pass these on to the plant. The plant in turn produces the carbon waste needed to serve as nutrients to the fungi. The two parties benefit from each other, which is why the 99% of plants form this symbiosis. This fungus grows in and around the root systems. From the roots, they burrow further into the substrate where they create a dense labyrinth of fungal rows. This enlarges the root system, resulting in better absorption of water and minerals such as phosphorus, potassium and other trace elements. The fungi can access cavities in the substrate that are too small for the roots and make a valuable element reservoir for plant absorption.
