Vermiculite is the generic name of a mineral from the mica family, composed of aluminum, magnesium and iron silicates. Its structure is laminar, containing some water.
By rapidly raising the temperature of the vermiculite, an expansion known as exfoliation is generated, resulting in a product with metallic reflections, brown in color, with low apparent density and high porosity.
Characteristics:
- It is very light, weighing between 60 and 140kg/m3, depending on particle size.
- Neutral pH (7.2).
- Free of pests, diseases and weeds.
- Incorporated into substrates, it promotes good aeration and absorbs large amounts of water.
- Its metallic shine increases light reflection, which is important in greenhouses and shade houses.
Applications:
- As a substrate for the cultivation and propagation of all types of plants due to its neutrality, good aeration and high water retention capacity.
- In seed germination trials for their health.
- Hydroponic crops.
- Suitable for mixing with sand in the cultivation and propagation of cacti and succulent plants.
- In plants that spend time in bags or pots that must be moved, due to their moisture retention capacity, porosity and light weight.
